Who is the Alliance? |
The ABPHE is a group of experienced Family Physicians who have passion and expertise in developing educational programs.
2. |
Why did the Alliance form? |
The landscape of physician continuing health education is changing. The historical model of CME development saw programs being developed where learners were peripherally involved in content decision. (Remember the days of the 75-slide didactic presentation developed for Family Doctors by specialists and a scientific advisor?) The future is physician led CME - where the target ‘customers’ articulate needs, content and educational process. The Alliance reflects the ‘new age’ of CHE development.
3. |
What is the business model for the Alliance? |
The Alliance for Best Practices in Health Education is a registered not-for-profit organization. Portions of funds collected from each program are re-directed into ‘orphan projects’. |
|
4. |
What is an ‘orphan project’? |
There are a number of topics or disease areas, which have no 'commercial interest' or external funding source - when it comes to educational program development. Yet there is often a strong interest and need for learners to get up to date, evidence-based information on these areas.
5. |
Has the Alliance developed any ‘orphan programs’? |
Yes. An accredited program was developed on Celiac Disease. This project was developed with the support and input of Alliance members, Gastroenterologists from the University of Calgary, patients and physicians with Celiac Disease. The program was formatted and translated with donated support from MedPlan Communications. Over 1000 Family Physicians attended this program through donated time slots at Primary Care Update (Diversified Communication) and at Family Medicine Forum (Toronto 2015 and Vancouver 2016). The Alliance is currently working on a program that will be eligible for new Mainpro+ accreditation.
6. |
How does the Alliance decide what program to develop? |
Organizations may approach the Alliance with a request for program development. Alternately, the Alliance has ‘pitched’ programs to potential sponsors who have provided educational grants. In all cases, the Alliance is responsible for program development and content - and fully adherent to ethical guidelines for physician education development.
7. |
Does the Alliance work exclusively for one Communications Company or sponsor? |
No. The ABPHE has worked with numerous agencies and sponsors.
8. |
Do regulatory bodies recognize the Alliance as a ‘physician organization’? |
Yes. Currently the FMOQ and CFPC recognize the ABPHE as a physician organization.
9. |
How did the Alliance come together? How was it decided who the members should be? |
Like attracts like. The Alliance members found themselves working on similar projects, going to the same meetings and sitting on the same planning committees. Through informal dialog we decided to bring this group of talented, experienced physicians and teacher together - to create quality CME within the context of being a physician organization.
10. |
Does the Alliance only develop CME for Family Physicians? |
Our expertise and strength is in the world of primary care: Family Physicians and the interdisciplinary health teams that increasingly deliver care to patients and families. However, the principles of adult education and CME extend to all specialties - and we are enthusiastic partners in these activities!
11. |
How can the Alliance help your organization educate physicians? |
If you are a non-for-profit group and need support in educational development or design, the Alliance has a mandate to support this kind of activity. If your organization is interested in collaboration, contact us at info@alliancebphe.org
12. |
Where does funding come from to develop these programs? |
Most projects are funded through educational grants from the pharmaceutical industry. Funding is provided to the Alliance and programs are developed independent of the sponsor or their agents. The independence of the Alliance and the physicians that work with us is critical to creating balanced, evidence-based, effective and credible educational programs.
